CINEMA

The 365 Project

In 2018, I started compiling the movies I watched, and by the end of the year I had watched more than 365 films. Since then I have been documenting the cinema in my life, a vertical memoir of the stories I’ve consumed.

Special Screenings, Local Theaters, & American Cinematheque

One of my favorite things to do in L.A., and a privilege I’m aware of, is going to film screenings with Q&A with the creators and cast. What draws me to cinema is its ability to pull you into the POV of another, and the cherry on top is to hear from those that created those moments. I plan on getting an American Cinematheque membership soon, so I can join their events and screenings. Other organizations that offer amazing screening opportunities is The Wrap’s FYC screening series and the USC School of Cinematic Arts screening program. Theaters with unique screening series I also recommend, is the UCLA Film & Television Archive Billy Wilder Theater located at the Hammer Museum and the Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown. Unique theaters I want to try next: Brain Dead Studios.

Film Festivals

As a cinephile, nothing brings me more joy than art shared by the community, for the community. I try to frequent local film festivals as much as possible, exposing myself to unique stories and shorts, I know I otherwise would never dedicate the time to watch or have access to. In January 2026 I made my way to Sundance for its last year in Utah, and in May 2026, I’ll be back at the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival.

COMMUNITY & CULTURE

  • I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in January 2024 as a birthday gift to myself— and I haven’t looked back. I grew up watching kung fu cinema and have a deep love and admiration for martial arts, so this has been a special journey, and one I’ve always wanted to start!

A competitive hobby: I have now competed in 2 tournaments, placing 2nd in both. It’s been exciting but challenging! It’s a constant learning experience, with mostly rough days on the mat wondering: what am I doing? Matches go by so fast, and injuries are often. But, it’s all part of the journey! I’d like to compete in at least 5 competitions and place first at least once before upgrading to a blue belt.

  • I’ve been dying to learn mahjong and finally made a commitment to go to Mahjong Underground events (an organization that hosts matches for the community). I mustered up the courage to finally play in 2026, and have now won 3 of the 4 official games I’ve played!

It’s been such a blessing to be part of this community. There’s a rich history to the game (we play Hong Kong style) and I continue to meet inspiring people each night. I make it a goal to go twice a month, and look forward to getting better each time!
